Fear of being without your mobile
More than half the population of the UK claims to suffer from nomophobia – the fear of being without a mobile phone, a study suggests.
Women are apparently far more likely to experience the anxiety than men, according to its findings.
Consumers are now so dependent on their gadgets that one fifth of mobile phone owners check their emails in bed and nearly half (42 per cent) take their devices to the beach while on holiday.
Some 54 per cent of people say they worry about being “out of mobile phone contact” – with women 17 per cent more likely to suffer from nomophobia than men, the survey revealed.
It showed 28 per cent of people will also look at their work emails while away from home, with men slightly more eager to check their emails than their female counterparts. A quarter of people even consult their phones during a dinner date – with women 10 per cent more likely to do so than their male counterparts.
But only 50 per cent of people bother to secure their devices with a password, the study commissioned by web security firm AppRiver found.
“It’s pretty clear that we’re a society totally reliant on our phones not only for personal use but business use too,” said Fred Touchette, senior security analyst at AppRiver. “What worries me is that, with so much information stored on them –
confidential office documents, contact details, emails, photos and bank log-ins – when these devices get lost or stolen and end up in the wrong hands, the information is so easily exploited.” He advised phone owners to protect their gadgets with a password or encryption. The study of 1000 workers was conducted by OnePoll in August.

New TfL website available for customer testing
From tomorrow (Tuesday 25 June), anyone visiting the Transport for London (TfL) website – www.tfl.gov.uk – will have the option of using a new look, new feature site.
• Customers can choose to use the new website with improved features over the summer
• Mobile optimisation and responsive design make information faster and easier to access while on the move
The new TfL website is ready to enter its beta test phase, giving customers the opportunity to explore the improved layouts and use the more personalised and intuitive features that will make it faster and easier to get the travel information they are looking for.
The current TfL website receives around 250 million visits annually. At least 25 per cent of these are from mobile devices for which the current site offers only limited functionality. The new site, which will be live in parallel with the current site until the end of summer, has been optimised for use on mobile devices and built with a responsive design so that it is consistent across mobile, tablet and desktop. It is cleaner, touch-screen friendly and quick to load while on the move.
The new site will initially preview the updated design and layout, new look Journey Planner and other top level content to give customers a feel for the improvements. New features will continue to be added to the site over the summer and customers are encouraged to test these out and give us their feedback.
Some of the key improvements will include:
• a more intuitive Journey Planner that remembers recent journeys making it easier to check regular routes;
• single fares information displayed clearly within Journey Planner;
• improved mapping and a Street View function in Journey Planner that will be helpful when travelling in unfamiliar areas;
• more live information about the status of bus, rail and road services, including accidents and traffic hotspots and future planned works.
Later during the beta test phase, the new ‘Nearby’ feature will be added. This will show local transport links for all modes, along with live travel information including status updates and live departures. This tool will provide customers with easier access to their options for journey planning. Customers will also be able to personalise their homepage from later in the summer.
Phil Young, Head of TfL Online, said: “We have redesigned our website around what our customers have told us they want. The new site is optimised for mobile devices, making it much easier to access travel information while on the go. We will add in more features over the next few months until we are ready to fully launch the new site and switch off the old one after the summer. We’re encouraging everyone to try out the new features and let us know what they think so we can continue to make improvements to meet our customers’ needs.”

STAR WARS FEATURE FILM PRODUCTION RETURNS TO THE U.K.
May 10, 2013
Lucasfilm announced today that production of Star Wars: Episode VII will take place in the United Kingdom. All of the six previous live-action Star Wars movies have included UK production in such famed studios as Elstree, Shepperton, Leavesden, Ealing and Pinewood Studios.
“We’ve devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our process on the new movie, and I’m thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilizing the incredible talent there can be a part of that,” said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. “Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun and recently War Horse, it’s very exciting to be heading back.”
Earlier this year, representatives from Lucasfilm met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in London to establish an agreement to produce Star Wars in the U.K. “I am delighted that Star Wars is coming back to Britain. Today’s announcement that the next Star Wars film will be shot and produced in the UK is great news for fans and our creative industries,” Osborne said today.
Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Michael Arndt and is scheduled for a 2015 release.
